Dove Ad, Gone Wrong, Gone Misinterpreted, or worse?

It's interesting to see how Social Media is quick to jump on the bandwagon when it comes to advertisements like this. What's also interesting is how they butcher, cut and skew advertisements to convey a different message; such as making it look like it is racist.

Dove’s Facebook ad, since removed. ‘If I had even the slightest inclination that I would be portrayed as inferior, or as the “before” in a before and after shot, I would have been the first to say an emphatic “no”.’

There's an issue with this photograph, can you tell what it is?

The biggest issue about this outrage is that they're only focused on one area of the advertisement and have cut out the rest. This does no one justice because it does not show the full story of the campaign, and it misdirects those who are clueless about what the advertisement originally was. The links provided also show some interesting comments about this issue which are only targeted to two demographics, whites and blacks.

Those who have posted these seem to have forgotten the other part of the advertisement which has the white woman reveal that she is someone else right after. It sounds to me like that this whole advertisement was just misinterpreted by those who were ignorant to the fact that there was more to the advertisement than this small snippet.

No talk about how the white woman has turned into someone who is of another ethnicity?
How odd.

This is a dangerous practice. It is one thing to misinterpret an advertisement, which of course, happens all the time. The ideas of each individual could be misinterpreted which itself is not bad, people just interpret things differently. It is a whole other issue when people start cutting things out  and only leave the pieces that they deem controversial or adds to their agenda. Why you may ask? It is because people are using this to convey false messages by using these modified ads, which sparks unnecessary outrage to those who are outright ignorant of what the original advertisement really was.

  1. I agree that this advertisement was completely misinterpreted by society. Though these things may happen occasionally, it is not right to completely cut out parts of an advertisement to make racial assumptions towards a company attempting to sell their products. It creates a bad image for Dove, which results in many consumers straying away from their products.
